Mrs. McQuarrie’s Stone Chair

Lady Macquarie’s Cha

Mrs Macquarie was the wife of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Folklore has it that she used to sit on the rock and watch for ships from Great Britain sailing into the harbour. She was known to visit the area and sit enjoying the panoramic views of the harbour.

Mrs Macquarie completed the road system around the Botanical Gardens started by William Bligh, including the loop now known as Mrs Macquaries Road which was finished in 1816. Part of her layout included a wall that separated the Governor’s private garden from the rest of the Domain. They called it – you guessd it – Macquarie’s Wall. The Domain had been set aside by Governor Arthur Phillip as his private reserve. Phillip’s personal servant, Henry Edward Dodd, established a small grain farm at the site of the future Royal Botanic Gardens.
